BECOMING A CHRISTIAN

A foundational belief for the Huntington SDA Church is also shared by the majority of Christians around the world. Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Savior of humanity, is “the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to Father except by [Him]” (John 14:6, NKJV).

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:16, 17, NKJV).

It all started soon after the creation of our world. Adam and Eve were tempted and sinned. Then we became a sin-infected race, bent toward temptation and selfishness.

If our final outcomes were left to our own devices, we’d be doomed—for “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23a, ESV).

GOD’S GIFT

But there’s more to Romans 6:23. Yes, the wages of sin is death… “but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (vs. 23b, ESV)

In the New Testament, Paul writes, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8, ESV).

That’s right, salvation is a gift. Available by way of God’s grace.

MY RESPONSE

We’ve all sinned, so none of us can do anything by our own efforts to become worthy of salvation.

However, God doesn’t want us lost forever. He loves us so much He sent His son Jesus, as our substitute, to live a perfect life on earth as our example. Then Jesus bore the consequences of all humanity’s sins by dying on the cross and being raised from the dead three days later—all so we could have the chance merely to choose to follow God. He died even for those who might not make that choice.

Jesus’ death and resurrection make up the cornerstone for our faith. Our drive to both study God’s Word and to incorporate that Word into our lives is in response to God’s ultimate love, as demonstrated on the Cross—anyone of us can be saved by grace just by accepting this Gift and following Him.

Common Questions About Baptism

Baptism is an important symbol of the new life that is created when someone becomes a follower of Jesus. It illustrates Christ’s burial and resurrection. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) (Colossians. 2:12). It also illustrates my new life as a Christian. (2 Corinthians 5:17) (Romans 6:4)

Baptism doesn’t make you a believer – it shows that you already believe.

Baptism does not “save” you, only your faith in Christ does that.

Baptism is an outward symbol of the commitment you’ve made in your heart.

Every person who believes in Christ should be baptized. (Acts 2:41) (Acts 8:13) (Acts 8:12)

There is no reason to delay. As soon as you have decided to receive Christ into your life, you can and should be baptized. Bible Studies are available to clarify any questions you may have.  However, be careful of delay. If you wait until you are “perfect”, you’ll never feel “good enough”!

Distinct from the practice of infant baptism, we practice  the dedication of children. Child dedication follows the example of Mary and Joseph dedicating the infant Jesus in the temple (Luke 2:22). Jesus ministered to children in a special way. “And He took them up in  His arms, put His hands on them and blessed them.” (Mark 10:16)

We are glad to offer a prayer of blessing  and dedication over  infants. However, child dedication is different from the baptism talked about in the Bible which was only for those old enough to believe. The purpose is to publicly confess your personal commitment to Christ.

We baptize by immersion because Jesus was baptized that way (Matthew 3:16). Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion (Acts 8:38-39) and the Greek word baptize means “to immerse or dip under water”.

Men and Women should bring a change of clothes they don’t mind getting wet in. A robe will be provided for you to put over your clothes. Bring your desired cap if you do not wish for your hair to get wet. A towel will be provided for you.

Yes! If each person understands fully the meaning of baptism, and each one has personally placed his/her trust in Christ for salvation, we encourage families to be baptized at the same time. It is a wonderful expression of commitment. However, it is important to remember that baptism is a personal statement of faith, not a family or group tradition. It is usually not wise to delay your baptism while waiting on others to join you. This puts an undue pressure on them, and delays your obedience.
